In January 2014 the first North Korean ski resort Masik was opened. Soldiers of the Korean People’s Army constructed the resort in only ten months, giving rise to the new slogan "Masikryong speed", which has become a symbol of national pride.
In Masik you don’t have to ski! Just come to visit hotel, wander the area and enjoy beautiful landscapes without skiing! You may just stop by to take pictures, have a coffee break or have lunch at local restaurant.
The Masik Ski Resort is located in Kangwon province, it is 24 km away from Wonsan city, about a 3.5 hour drive from the nation's capital Pyongyang.
What is Masik Ski Resort
The highest elevation of the slopes from the base is 1360m. The total resort area is 1412 hectares. There are four chairlifts will bring you to the summit, it will take you a while to get to the peak as 3 separate lifts should be taken. There is no gondola unfortunately.
Total runs length is about 110 km and the steepest slope is almost 40 degrees. There are 11 multi-level ski runs ( only 5 are currently open) including two beginner slopes.The intermediate slopes have a belt lift and a gliding escalator. There are 3 first aid and patrol stations.You can ride both ski and snowboard, or you can polish your ice-skating skills in Masic Ice-rink (extra fee applies). The ski resort is open November through March.
You can bring your own equipment (in this case please note that Air Koryo allows 20kg of free baggage allowance for economy passengers, additional charge of 20RMB per kg will be applied on the Beijing to Pyongyang flight. On the flight from Pyongyang to Beijing the extra baggage allowance is 4 Euro per additional kg) or rent gear and equipment at the resort - there is a rent shop where you can take Masik-branded ski apparel.
Masik Ski Resort features everything modern ski resorts do – luxury hotel Masikryong, ski-lifts , ski rentals, and various entertaining facilities. The luxury hotel features 120 rooms. Local and foreign tourists can enjoy swimming pool, sauna, cafés, restaurants, bars, billiard tables, karaoke etc.
